Understanding Doodle Generations

Doodle generations describe how a doodle dog is bred. The letters and numbers (F1, F1B, F2, etc.) simply explain which parents were used in the breeding.

Most doodles come from crossing a Poodle with another breed such as a Golden Retriever to produce a Goldendoodle.

Each generation changes the genetic mix slightly, which can influence coat type, shedding level, and predictability.

F1 Doodle

50% Poodle + 50% Retriever

An F1 doodle is the first cross between two purebred dogs.

Example:Golden Retriever × Poodle = F1 Goldendoodle

Traits:

An F1B doodle is bred back to a Poodle.

• About 75% Poodle genetics

F1b Doodle + Poodle

This generation increases the Poodle influence further.

Traits:

• Higher percentage of Poodle genetics

• Curlier coats

An F2 doodle is produced when two F1 doodles are bred together.
